QC PESO get updates on labor market trends in Metro Manila
The COVID-19 pandemic has been significantly reshaping the labor market and employment situation in the country. Amidst the identified challenges brought about by the pandemic, the Department of Labor and Employment - National Capital Region (DOLE-NCR) continues to carry its mandate in providing support and technical assistance to the local Public Employment Service Offices (PESOs) in the region. With this in mind, DOLE-NCR conducted an online learning session on Labor Market Information with Quezon City PESO on October 6, 2020.

Labor and Employment Officer Allyson Lorraine Arceo presented the Regional Situationer of NCR amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which is a product of environmental scanning research and consultation with key industry players. She further discussed the numerical effects of the pandemic, as reflected in the results of the Labor Force Survey, and explained how such figures translate and manifest in the operations of both the formal and informal economy.

To deepen the participants’ understanding of Labor Market Information, the key employment generators in the region were also explained, focusing on how each sector has been responding to the situation in order to retain operations and ultimately, to preserve employment. The “retained” jobs during the pandemic were also enumerated, as well as jobs which are deemed in-demand as the region’s economy slowly reopens. Likewise, as a response to the changing needs of the labor market, Arceo also posed a challenge among the participants to assume a meaningful role in ensuring that their constituents are equipped with the relevant digital 21st century skills so as for them to remain competitive in the world of work.

Finally, the new hiring trends were also briefly discussed, expounding on how PESOs can further improve their employment facilitation services in line with the Department’s initiatives in the digital transformation of services.

This learning session is in line with DOLE-NCR’s mandate to deliver relevant information among partner PESOs to further equip program implementers at the ground level in addressing employment concerns as the region gradually progresses to the new normal. END / Allyson Lorraine Arceo
