DOLE-NCR holds career guidance for high school completers
The Department of Labor and Employment - National Capital Region (DOLE-NCR) conducted a career guidance and employment coaching session among the Grade 10 and Grade 12 students of Highway Hills Integrated School (HHIS), Mandaluyong City on March 26, 2021.

The event was livestreamed on the Facebook Group of the HHIS where more than 500 students from Grades 10 and 12 have participated.

In line with the theme, “Pagtukoy at Pagbibigay Alam sa Pagpili ng Kurso: Tungo Sa Kinabukasan,” Allyson Lorraine Arceo from the Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division of DOLE-NCR discussed the crucial changes in the region’s employment landscape under the new normal. Particularly, she discussed how the pandemic has affected the key employment generators in the region—information which is crucial for graduating students, as these determine the sectors and industries which will generate jobs and absorb the new entrants to the labor force in the next few years. Furthermore, the identified resilient jobs in each sector were discussed, being significant factors in deciding the students’ career path considering the effects of the health and economic crisis.

As one of the four exits for K-12 completers is employment, among higher education, entrepreneurship, and middle-level skills development, the DOLE-NCR representative further expounded on the changes in hiring under the new normal. She shared practical tips in job seeking, strategies in using the various online job aggregators, as well as techniques in building a strong online profile.

Moreover, Arceo emphasized how the Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIRe) has been reshaping the labor market and redefining jobs even before the pandemic. She said that FIRe creates great opportunities such as new jobs and industries. Conversely, she said that it also presents potential peril of putting manual and mundane tasks into obsolescence; hence, highlighting the need for the Filipino workers to focus on upskilling and retooling in order to stay competent amid the various  disruptions in the labor market.

The Career Guidance and Advocacy Program and Employment Coaching Program of DOLE-NCR  seeks to help completers make informed choices in their respective courses and career paths so they could easily land gainful employment after completion. This ultimately aims to address the “job-skills mismatch” problem in the labor market, so that courses taken by the students will later on fit the required competencies of employers and other hiring agencies.
