Philippine School for the Deaf taps DOLE-NCR for career guidance

The Persons with Disabilities are among the sectors that are considered to be among the most vulnerable. Due to their conditions, they sometimes experienced discrimination in most of the basic services including access to structures. They oftentimes felt neglected that lead to a mindset of hopelessness and abandonment.

If one will look into the situation, the state as to where the sector is currently at can be stemmed from the lack of education and access to relevant information as regard interventions and measures to alleviate their conditions.

On 14 May 2021, the Philippine School for the Deaf tapped the Department of Labor and Employment – National Capital Region (DOLE-NCR) in its Virtual Career Orientation for Grade 12 Learners on Curriculum Exits. DOLE-NCR Senior Labor and Employment Officer Ryan Roberto E. Delos Reyes of the Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division represented the Office as resource speaker.

In said session, Delos Reyes highlighted the skills required by the labor market that needs to be honed and developed by the entrants to the labor force. Cognitive thinking ability, adaptability, innovativeness, and sociability are among the skills he discussed in detail. He likewise related said skills to the current situation as the health crisis accelerated the utilization of the technological advancement brought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. 

In order to present a holistic view of the labor market, he also shared relevant information on the region’s Key Employment Generators including its performance as the economy recover and progress towards the new normal. 

The DOLE-NCR representative also emphasized having a positive perspective of the labor market in order to develop a right work attitude. He also reminded the participants that most of the job interview questions are situational, which he said, may center on how one make use of his or her time during the lockdown while the answer to such question can make or break one’s employment chances as it will surface one’s capability to be flexible and innovative.

The activity, attended by some 116 graduating Senior High School students, is the Department’s contribution in the Incheon Strategy particularly on Goal 1: Reduce poverty and enhance work and employment prospects. END / Ryan Roberto Delos Reyes
