The Journey of a SPES Beneficiary

“Education is the key to success.” This notion serves as an inspiration to King P. Alviar, third of the seven children of Ernesto, a metal craftsman and Carmelita, a labandera. King is a 4th year BS Multimedia Arts student of University of Caloocan City who persists to finish his education. When he’s not in school, King can be found in the streets of South Caloocan working as a padyak driver to help his parents with their finances and augment his family’s measly income.

For this purpose, he sought the assistance of the Department of Labor and Employment – National Capital Region CAMANAVA Field Office and the City Government of Caloocan thru its Labor Industrial Relations Office (LIRO) to be a part of the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) for two batches. SPES provides non-hazardous employment opportunities to the poor yet deserving students for a period of twenty days during summer or Christmas break.

Among other SPES beneficiaries, King’s story was even featured on an episode of Tapatan ni Tunying which aired on May 5, 2017.

Said king during our interview.

After his touching story was featured in Tapatan ni Tunying, King got a lot of support here and abroad.

King emphasized that aside from the learnings and experience, the blessings showered since he became a SPES beneficiary. He is now confident with better chances of success in the near future.END/Angelica C. Fresnoza
