Journey to Success: Tale of Two Jobstarters

In Caloocan City, two JobStarters whose mindset in being successful are worthy of emulation. Ms. Vielle Ramos and Mr. David Michael Menina are two examples of preserving and dedicated youth in ensuring a brighter future for themselves and their families.

The two shared a common story. Both came from simple families who are struggling to survive the rigors of city life. Both experienced hardships in their quest for education and their efforts in trying to find decent employment. Both are products of their time, millennials to be exact, whose fast phased outlook in life oftentimes disappointed them and made them re-think of their career choices.

But these experiences did not hamper their spirit instead, it strengthened them and solidify their resolve in their pursuit of success. Ms. Ramos, a graduate of BSBA Marketing Management of University of Caloocan mentioned that she learned about the program through PESO. On the other hand, Mr. Menina, a graduate of Political Science from the same school, heard about JobStart from a friend and was encouraged to tag along to apply. He was the one considered for the program.

Both Ms. Ramos and Mr. Menina were products of the initial roll-out of the program in Caloocan City. They undergo the usual Life Skills Training wherein they were trained on grooming, proper decorum, and attitude enhancement in preparation for their eventual entry to the world of work. “Lumakas po ang self-confidence ko pagkatapos ng LST”, said Mr. Menina, who graduated at the top of his batch.

“Napakalaking tulong talaga ng JobStart dahil marami kaming natutunan. Nagkaroon pa kami ng magandang trabaho”, said Ms. Ramos. She also emphasized that through JobStart, she was able to provide for her family’s needs. Mr. Merina at present is the supervisor of Molecular Ice Cream. “Considered po kaming mga pioneers nitong store. Napakalaking tulong talaga ng JobStart dahil nagkatrabaho kami ng maayos.” Both Ms. Ramos and Mr. Merina are working in said store.

The JobStart Program is one of the youth interventions being implemented by the Department in response to the concerns of youth employability and job and skills mismatch.
