Fire safety compliance reinforced in Makati and Pasay Malls

The Labor Inspectors of the DOLE Makati-Pasay Field Office (MPFO) held inspections of several malls within the cities of Makati and Pasay on 22 January 2018 following a memorandum signed by DOLE-NCR Regional Director Henry John S. Jalbuena on 17 January 2018. The order was rooted from Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III’s memorandum dated 08 January 2018, directing all the DOLE Regional Offices to coordinate with their local Bureau of Fire Protection in the light of the recent fire incidents in Davao and Cebu. Secretary Bello specifically ordered inspection of fire safety compliance of establishments particularly inside Malls and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies.

Prior to the conduct of inspection, MPFO Senior LEO Morris Orbe, a former BFP Fire Officer, briefed the Labor Inspectors on the rudiments of Fire Safety Inspection such as Fire Drills, Fire Extinguishers, Evacuation Plans, Fire Exits, Fire Safety Inspection Certificates, among others.

Several observations were reported during the conduct of inspection in the said establishments. Findings included locked fire exits, obstructed passageways, unavailability of evacuation plans, and among others. Said issues were raised in a meeting with the management and representatives of the establishments for immediate correction action.

Labor Inspectors were given until 31 January 2018 to finalize the inspections.

Said activity aims to reinforce the efforts of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards of the Department of Labor and Employment to ensure safety and health in the workplace. END / Mark Avner Acosta / IMSD-LCO-2018-01 / PRJ18-07
