Labor inspectors gear up for mall inspection in QC

Quezon City Field Offices of the DOLE and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) teamed-up for the Fire Safety Orientation of all Labor Inspectors. Said orientation was facilitated by Gary Parchament of BFP-QC Fire District on 23 January 2018. Said event was held in view of the recent fire incidents involving mall establishments, which is one of the identified priorities of the DOLE Labor Standards.

The one-day orientation aimed to clarify issues and concerns of Labor Inspectors on Fire Safety and gain familiarity with the BFP key indicators during inspection of establishments. This is also to fulfill the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHS) checklist.

Parchament highlighted the importance of checking the salient accessories in an establishment during the conduct of labor inspection such as the exit access, suppression system, and fire safety gadgets (e.g. pumps, sprinkler heads, smoke detectors, panel board, and fire hose). Parchament added that there are 38 malls situated in Quezon City and the management of said establishments are to conduct a separate preventive maintenance on a monthly basis and should secure a fire drill certificate twice a year.

In her closing remarks, DOLE-QCFO Director Cagara reiterated to the team the importance of fire safety aspect, which is a must during the conduct of mall inspections. END / Eilaine Lou Lumagbas / IMSD-LCO-2018-01 / PRJ18-08
