Pasig plant workers eligible for SAWP

Coconut Methyl Esther (CME) or Biodiesel workers of Pure Essence International, Inc., in Bagong Ilog, Pasig City, were eligible for the benefits under the Social Amelioration and Welfare Program (SAWP), said DOLE-Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns (BWSC).

SAWP is a social amelioration scheme instituted under the Republic Act No. 9367 of the Biofuels Act of 2006. The scheme aims to improve the socio-economic well-being of workers in the biofuel industry including their families, thru augmentation of income and access to productive resources, social protection coverage, and provision of livelihood and employment opportunities.

Division Chief Luis Reynoso of BWSC’s Social Amelioration Development section guided the 17 workers from the said establishment on SAWP details.

CME is the fuel derived from coconut oil. For every liter produced and sold, the government has a lien of 0.05 pesos per liter—the amount which the plant producer need to remit monthly to DOLE.

On the same day, BWSC held an audit or a reconciliation of the amount remitted by Pure Essence Inc. with a total remittance of nearly 4 million pesos as SAWP lien since 2012. The same fund goes to the program and shall be used to defray expenses on the benefits availed by the workers which include, but are not limited to, livelihood program, maternity benefit (above SSS and company policy benefits), scholarships, and death benefits.
