DOLE joins TESDA to bridge skills and employment

TAGUIG CITY—“ABC: Attitude, Brightness, and Character. If you have the right attitude coupled with brightness or intelligence then that defines your character. However, please take note that attitude takes precedence over brightness and as such, accentuate its importance”, said in the message of Regional Director Henry John S. Jalbuena delivered in his behalf by Senior LEO Ryan Roberto E. Delos Reyes of the Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division, during the National TVET Enrollment and Job Fair.

In the same speech, Delos Reyes emphasized the importance of having appropriate skills that respond to the needs of the industries so as to avoid mismatch.

Sharing tips on job searching, Delos Reyes also reminded the participants to have a compelling cover letter and a résumé or CV that demonstrate their understanding of the skills needed for the job. When invited for an interview, he encouraged the participants to make their responses focused on one’s abilities, experience, knowledge and personal qualities relevant to the job.

Noting the importance of labor standards, Delos Reyes briefly discussed minimum wage, holiday pay, and other benefits mandated by law.

In attendance are the officers of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) headed by Deputy Director General Rosanna A. Urdaneta, representing Director General Guiling A. Mamondiong; Regional Director Cenon M. Querubin, and the six District Directors of NCR. The Philippine Navy and its band graced the occasion through performances that exemplified their talents. Said army unit also forged a Memorandum of Agreement with TESDA.

One of the highlights of the activity was the awarding of Toolkits to the graduates of TESDA programs wherein beneficiaries were given starter sets on welding, baking, sewing and massage. More than 50 employers joined the activity with an estimated 9,000 vacancies offered to the jobseekers.

The activity is in line with increasing the awareness on the importance of technical vocational education and its contributions in addressing the concerns of job and skills mismatch. Likewise, the activity is one of the measures being undertaken by the Government to facilitate employment to bridge the gap in the labor market. END / Ryan Delos Reyes / IMSD-LCO-2018-03 / PRM18-03
