DOLE continuously capacitates guidance counselors to tackle job-skills mismatch
The ever-changing dynamics of both the education and employment landscape entails enhancement of the capacity of the duty-bearers in providing career services. As one of the primary pillars of employment, career guidance aims to provide the stakeholders, both parents and students, with informed career choices in order to address the concern of job and skills mismatch.
On 12-13 and 30 July 2018, the local chapters of the Career Advocates Life Coaches and Mentors or CALM Networks of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, and Pasay were capacitated on the regional results of Project JobsFit 2022 and the labor market information study of the Department at Caloocan City Hall’s Bulwagang Katipunan and Pasay Division of City Schools. 
Results of the said DOLE study are significant to keep the partner implementers abreast with skills requirements of the key employment generators (KEGs) of the National Capital Region (NCR).
Six KEGs were identified in said study which have the capacity to absorb most of the region’s workforce such as in 1) transportation; 2) construction; 3) IT-BPM; 4) health and wellness; 5) wholesale and retail trade; and 6) hotel, restaurant, and tourism. As a service-sector driven region, primary skills such as communication, social, and cognitive thinking were emphasized as among the most sought after qualifications. 
“Students should develop the needed 21st Century Skills so as to effectively enter the world of work,” said guest resource speaker Senior LEO Ryan Roberto E. Delos Reyes of DOLE-NCR Regional Office.
In addition to skills, Delos Reyes highlighted the value of having a positive employment outlook and work attitude to ace employment.
“Attitude defines one’s altitude,” said Delos Reyes. “That’s why we always encourage our CALM Network to hone the students’ positive perception and right mindset towards work to have a healthy work perspective,” he added. 
During the activity, the participants planned for the ways forward of the program. Conduct of employment coaching and labor education for the graduating students of K to 12 were slated for the last quarter of 2018 up to early next year. 
Towards the end of the activity, the career guidance advocates expressed their profound enthusiasm as they are to embark on this familiar yet increasingly challenging environment to harness the next generation of efficient workforce.
