Bridging youth to job opportunities: A convergent approach among duty-bearers

Duty-bearers from the Department of Labor and Employment - National Capital Region (DOLE-NCR) and the local government of Pasay through its Public Employment Service Office (PESO) and Local Youth Development Office gathered on 10 August 2018 on an activity that catered to around 80 graduating students from a local university and several JobStart beneficiaries in said city. Initiated by the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), the seminar cum job fair aims to facilitate employment services to make the new entrants to the workforce more confident and competitive.

In her opening message, PESO Manager of Pasay City Filipinas Rosario C. Sampang encouraged the attendees to listen intently to the lectures so as to gain information in acing employment during the job fair. The SK Federation President likewise requested the graduating students to actively participate and be involved in the activities of the local government in order to be aware of the development in the city. 

DOLE-NCR Senior LEO Ryan Roberto E. Delos Reyes of the Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division gave a lecture on Skills Development in order to raise the awareness on the needed skills by the different industries and companies in NCR. Delos Reyes emphasized on communication, social, decision making, and analytical skills as the top skills that has to be developed and honed as it is responsive to the identified Key Employment Generators (KEGs) of the region. Delos Reyes also stressed on the relevance of having positive attitude and perspective towards work in line with the current automation and technological advancement. 

Liz Lauron, Project Coordinator of JobStart, presented said youth intervention program including its three phases. She also highlighted that the program aims to shorten the school-to-work transition of the beneficiaries and make them more employable in the labor market.

The activity is part of the local government’s initiative to touch-base with its constituents. Said approach aims to provide a convergent method in cascading relevant information to ascertain its effective implementation.

As for DOLE-NCR, it is part of the agency’s commitment as member of the Regional Youth Advisory Council to provide technical assistance to the local governments of NCR in giving interventions that caters to the development and empowerment of the youth sector so as to harness their potential for economic progress and advancement.
