“Ako naman ngayon ang tutulong sa mga GIP beneficiaries natin ngayon.”

That was both a personal and professional commitment of Amicel B. Maguigad, a former beneficiary of the Government Internship Program (GIP) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Maguigad started her GIP journey in 2012 as one of the enumerators of the Child Labor Program at the DOLE Manila field office. As an enumerator, her task was to profile child laborers in the assigned barangays.

A component of KABATAAN 2000 under Executive Order no. 130 s. 1993 and DOLE Administrative Order No. 260-15, the GIP is a 6-month internship program that aims to provide opportunities for young workers to serve the general public in the government, particularly in the fields and disciplines related to labor and employment.

“GIP is similar to an on-the-job-training,” said DOLE Manila Field Office Director Ma. Corazon Pepito. “Beneficiaries gain experience and exposure to the real working environment.”

The DOLE interns, under the revised guidelines, receive allowances amounting to 75 percent of the existing minimum wage applicable to their assigned DOLE offices.

Pepito added that the program allows the beneficiaries to instill a sense of commitment, discipline, and right attitude towards work. These values influenced Maguigad to persevere in her role, hoping that one day she will land a permanent position in the government.

In 2014, Maguigad's hard work paid off as she was tasked to supervise the enumerators in the same field office. "As a supervisor, ako po yung nagko-consolidate ng reports ng mga enumerators ng field office namin and then nag-aanalyze and summarize ng final report para sa [DOLE-NCR] regional office," said Maguigad.

Maguigad became a project-based staff in that same year after completing her internship at DOLE Manila. “Mula noon, hindi na ako umalis sa DOLE,” she said.

Maguigad continued to demonstrate a promising future in the government. With her eagerness to succeed, she finally became a regular employee in the same agency in 2015.

“Nag-apply ako at natanggap for a permanent position in 2015. Dahil na din sa encouragement ng mga kasamahan ko sa opisina [DOLE Manila], nag-apply pa ulit ako para sa mas mataas na posisyon in 2016. Kaya ngayon, ako na focal person ng GIP,” said Maguigad.

Now a permanent employee, Maguigad remains grateful for all the people who have helped her since her humble beginnings.

“Ngayong nandito na ako sa posisyon na ito, malaking pasasalamat ko sa mga taong tumulong sa akin,” she said. END / Mary Jane Gawat
