Planning for convergent approach: DOLE's contribution to agribusiness
The Philippines is primarily an agricultural country, owing to its strategic location and the weather that compliments the country’s flora and fauna. However, with the passing of time, agriculture in the country has decreased together with the farmland that used to be cultivated by the farmers. Likewise, the yield of the seas dwindled with the unorthodox ways of reaping its produce.

On that premise, the Department of Agriculture held a two-day planning workshop to capture information from its participants and craft a plan that will respond to the needs of time. Strengthening Agribusiness, as its flagship initiative, was the agency’s fundamental response.

The National Capital Region, being the country’s major consumer of agricultural goods and its related products, has a stake in sustaining the agribusiness initiative. As such, DOLE-NCR responded to the call of ensuring that pertinent information regarding the sector will be adequately provided.

Said activity was held on 16-17 January 2019 at the University of the Philippines - Institute for Small Scale Industries in Diliman, Quezon City. DOLE-NCR Senior Labor and Employment Officer Ryan Roberto E. Delos Reyes of the Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division represented the agency.

“It is high time for us to bring in the word “cool” to agriculture,” said Delos Reyes as he explained to the participants the need to entice the younger generation to be involved in agriculture. He further said that with the global and regional trends on robotics and artificial intelligence, the youth should develop their expertise to cope with the demands of time.

Delos Reyes also emphasized that investment should be translated to employment for the Filipinos to see and feel economic growth. He added: “This will enable Filipinos to put food on their tables, and have a sense of accomplishment and security.” He also stressed that skills development should grow side by side with investment as an effective strategy to lure more investors to the country.

Agribusiness was identified in the two previous labor market reports of the Department as one of the sectors that have potentials in generating employment in the coming years including the manufacturing and trade aspects of said sector. END / Ryan Roberto Delos Reyes
