Every Filipinos have the right to decent employment, including the persons with disabilities (PWD). However, most of them can be seen in the streets of the metropolis either as mendicants or trying to make a living by being engaged in menial jobs. Various interventions were made to ensure their well-being and enable them to maximize their potentials through gainful undertakings. Such initiative includes employment facilitation.

On February 19, 2019, the DOLE-National Capital Region, through its Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division, spearheaded the conduct of orientation on the employment rights and inclusivity of the PWDs in the labor market.

The activity was participated by the officers and members of the Family Welfare Committees Council of the Philippines (FWCOMPHIL)—most of whom are human resources (HR) practitioners.

Representatives from the National Council for Disability Affairs (NCDA) were tapped to provide technical know-how on the rights to employment and relevant laws that caters to PWD concerns, inclusive employment, and sensitivity to the sector’s conditions. Also discussed were the advantages of employing PWDs such as tax rebates and incentives.

The activity enabled the participants to gain insights on the situation of the PWDs including their plight and the circumstances that surrounds their situation.

HR Manager Ramil Anzaldo of Fraser Place Manila shared his company’s experiences in hiring and providing employment to PWDs. He also highlighted their awareness and consideration to PWD needs.

One participant said that the activity made them understand the needs of the PWDs and recognize their potentials in the job market. Another employment practitioner participant said that looking at a different angle allowed them to re-think of employment possibilities for PWDs.

The activity is part of the continuing commitment of DOLE-NCR to strengthen its advocacy on the PWDs empowerment through cooperation with industry partners to harness the sector’s potential for gainful employment and full participation in the economic development. END / Ryan Roberto Delos Reyes
