The graduating scholars of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) was in for a treat as the Department of Labor and Employment – National Capital Region (DOLE-NCR) was tapped by said agency to provide relevant information on acing employment amidst pandemic as part of their graduation activity on March 26, 2021.
DOLE-NCR was represented by Senior Labor and Employment Officer Ryan Roberto E. Delos Reyes of the Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division to hold the online employment coaching activity. He presented and discussed useful information about the current hiring trends in the labor market such as the use of digital platforms during job hunt, writing application letter, and preparing for job interviews. He also mentioned the importance of knowing the company’s profile and the available vacant positions so as to respond properly during interviews.
As to the conduct of pre-employment activities of companies, he said that there is nothing new in the job hunt preparations except the venue since majority are utilizing the digital or online platforms. He also mentioned that the health crisis seems to compliment the effects of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIRe) as the fear of being infected by the virus propelled the society to utilize various technological advancements that accompanied FIRe.
He also gave tips on job interviews and mentioned that most of the interviewers’ queries are situation-based questions related to the current health crisis. He continued that the hiring managers will want to gauge the critical thinking abilities as well as the emotional balance of the job applicants in posing situational questions.
The session entitled “Hiring during the COVID-19 Pandemic: How the Health Crisis is Reshaping the Labor Market,” was well received by the attendees as they expressed their appreciation to the topic due to its practicality and usefulness for their eventual entry to the world of work.
The DOST Scholars’ Exit Conference is an annual activity being held by said agency for their graduating scholars. This year’s activity was participated by some 700 graduating scholars.
The provision of pertinent information as regard changes in the hiring practices of companies are part of the employment coaching initiative of the DOLE that aims to prepare the students and jobseekers for their initial participation to the labor market.
