One of the main thrust of the government is to provide meaningful and sustainable economic undertakings to the populace, whether in wage or self-employment. This commitment will enable a holistic approach and appreciation on job generation and as such, contribute to the country’s economic progress.

Entrepreneurship or self-employment is a career path that enables people to be adventurous, witty, and self-reliant; to chart their own career destiny based on their own commitment and passion. A career path with the opportunity to be their own boss.

For DOLE-NCR and Mandaluyong City Public Employment Service Office (PESO), the month of October is the proper time to disseminate information about entrepreneurship and promote it as an alternative career path to the would-be entrants to the world of work. DOLE-NCR Senior Labor and Employment Officer Ryan Roberto E. Delos Reyes of the Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division served as Resource Speaker for the seminar advocacy.

During the sessions, Delos Reyes said one should understand that the entrepreneurs paved the way for wage-employment and added that it is through their sheer determination to succeed that made possible the creation and thriving of business that employed people from all walks of life. He cited successful business tycoons and reminded the attendees that they started small but with big dreams as they learn to instill discipline among themselves and resonate the same to their subordinates.

The DOLE-NCR representative also discussed the characteristics of an entrepreneur, including things they need to consider when starting a business, such as the financial capacity and administrative concerns in the pre-launch of business. He also discussed the different business phases so as to familiarize the participants on the cycles of engagement and understand the strong and weak situations in running the venture.

Other related topics included partnership with family and friends and the emerging e-commerce. The later topic was related to the present condition of the region that saw the surge of online selling and the utilization of technology as means to cope with the current health crisis. Delos Reyes said that the e-commerce, as we know today, has supported employment in retail trade, food business, as well as logistics. He added that it serves as the region’s lifeline that caters to the needs of the populace and growth of the micro and small enterprises.

The online interaction opened the avenue for the participants to inquire on the topics presented during the session. Most inquiries centered on business start-up including finances and loans followed by government initiatives on the development of business.

Entrepreneurship has been part of the Career Guidance and Employment Coaching Program so as to have holistic approach in providing informed choice for the students and would-be entrants to the labor market.

The advocacy sessions were conducted in coordination with the Public Employment Service Office of Mandaluyong at the Isaac Lopez Integrated School on October 22, 2021; Eulogio Rodriguez Integrated School on October 26, 2021; and Addition Hills Integrated School on October 29, 2021.
