The Philippine National Hero Jose Rizal once said, “The youth is the hope of our fatherland.” This strong belief symbolizes that the youth, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, remains inclusive, adaptive, and resilient to the changing reality. They commendably demonstrate perseverance, consistency, dedication and hope in bringing about diverse self-development through education.

In an effort to provide timely and relevant preparation for their graduating scholars who will soon enter the labor force, the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) tapped the Department of Labor and Employment – National Capital Region (DOLE-NCR) for an employment coaching during the DOST-SEI Scholars’ Exit Conference via virtual platform on March 18, 2022.

DOLE-NCR Senior Labor and Employment Officer Ryan Roberto E. Delos Reyes of the Employment Promotion and Worker’s Welfare Division equipped the 1,414 DOST-SEI graduating scholars with relevant and timely information about the Philippine Labor Force, Key Employment Generators (KEGs), and the VUCA reality in the new normal. He also presented a detailed perspective on the resilient and in-demand jobs in the new normal, relevant skills needed by employers, and importance in choosing the right job.

The DOLE-NCR representative highlighted that jobseekers should be armed with the technical know-how in using digital tools especially that majority of the businesses have migrated into the diverse use of digitalization and web-based recruitment tools, site or job aggregators, as a result of the emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He also emphasized that digital skills should also be accompanied with a strong and reliable online profile to help elevate and widen the search of these would-be entrants.

Aside from the prominence and developments in the pre-employment considerations of companies during the pandemic, he also gave tips on how these would-be entrants will market themselves, particularly on how to tailor-fit a job application cover letters, smart-craft resumes, ace job interviews, and probe questions relevant to the position and the company. He further stressed that despite the virtual shifts, every employer remains consistent in gauging jobseekers who possess the ABC qualification or the Attitude, Brightness, and Character.

Participants thanked the DOLE-NCR resource speaker and appreciated the timely topic, which they said, will serve as their concrete guide for their eventual admission to the labor force.

DOLE-NCR remains steadfast in upholding its mandate to yield significant and diversified information relative to the developments in the employment practices and considerations of companies. The regional office continuously promote coordination and cooperation among and between partner agencies and stakeholders, including DOST-SEI, to strengthen the workforce preparation of their students.
