The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Mandaluyong celebrated the Women’s Month with the release of its “Bigasan” assistance for their 70 beneficiaries on March 10, 2022. As part of their social preparations, they invited DOLE-NCR to lecture on entrepreneurship and its economic importance relative to employment.
In her opening remarks, Emma L. Javier, head of Mandaluyong LGU’s Public Employment Service Office, encouraged their beneficiaries to sustain the assistance awarded by their LGU. She emphasized that the “Bigasan” should be the start-up of their entrepreneurial activity as the city is on an economic rebound due to health crisis.
Senior labor officer Ryan Roberto E. Delos Reyes of the Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division represented DOLE-NCR and stressed the important contributions of entrepreneurs in the economy by providing information on Metro Manila’s profile. During the orientation, he said that over 90% of the businesses in Metro Manila are considered MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises). As such, he added that support to the economic undertakings that caters to establishing businesses in said region as well as sustaining their operations is crucial; hence, the reason for doing said activity.
Delos Reyes also pointed out that the business atmosphere in NCR has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic as most are shifting to the online platform from the traditional physical stores. He added that going digital is one of the innovations that one may adopt to ensure wider client reach and substantial income and the allocation for rent can be allotted for other products to be sold.
Delos Reyes also shared stories of famous business tycoons to ensure a holistic appreciation of the topic. He also emphasized the importance of having a complete plan for their “Bigasan” by encouraging them to be conscious of their daily operations and earnings. He also advised the beneficiaries to be diligent in bookkeeping to help monitor their earnings, check the status of their revenue, and plan for their next move for expansion.
In closing, Delos Reyes highlighted the importance of having a higher purpose in establishing business. Aside from profit, he said that having their own business means providing employment to fellow Filipinos and making significant contributions in their lives.
